"Why I Volunteer," Featuring Nick West

Around Sturgis Bank, it is no secret that Nick West, Loan Processing Representative at Sturgis Main, is a volunteering enthusiast. Odds are, if we are participating in an event around Saint Joseph County, Nick West is either orchestrating it or helping in some way.

His passion for supporting local organizations and lending a hand to the people that make up the community he loves was sparked at a young age. "My mother is another well-known person in the community for her involvement," said Nick. "She was the Director at the Chamber of Commerce, which means she was in the middle of everything that is ‘Sturgis.’ She seemed to be organizing or attending an event almost daily, even on the weekends. Growing up, seeing everything she did for the community impacted me."

When Nick moved back to the area, he began volunteering, but once he joined the Sturgis Bank Team, his commitment to serving the community took flight.

"Our company leaders encouraged me to pursue more opportunities to get involved. So, when Matt Scheske (President and COO) reached out to me regarding an opening at the Chamber of Commerce as an Ambassador, I knew it was the right move,” said Nick. “I quickly got to know the local business owners and members of the community on a more personal level. They have my phone number and feel comfortable calling me if they need assistance organizing an event or gathering helpers."

As an Ambassador for the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce, Nick has volunteered for events such as –

Countless Ribbon Cuttings for new businesses
Monthly Business After-Hours
Sturgis Fest
The BBQ Fest
Bourbon, Bacon and Blues

Outside his work with the Chamber of Commerce, Nick also participates in the Sturgis Bank School Savings Program. He spent six years helping while his eldest daughter was in elementary, and now that his youngest daughter is starting elementary school, he is looking forward to another six years of supporting the program.

Nick’s family enjoys accompanying him to events, especially each summer during Sturgis Fest and one of their favorites in December, an annual event at the local Christmas Tree Farm. "We look forward to attending this event every year. They get to shop and enjoy the food and drinks while I do some mingling!"

From sporting the Nutty the Squirrel costume at countless events through the years for Sturgis Bank to road-side trash pickup on M-66, Nick's contributions to the community and Sturgis Bank are seemingly endless. "My hope is I can push and encourage others to get involved. I try to offer opportunities for others to join in on, and I have had good success here at Sturgis Bank!"
